Stockholm was essentially designed for families. The city's infrastructure is world-class for strollers — every Metro station has lifts, the pavements are wide and well-maintained, and children in public spaces are treated as entirely expected guests. Skansen alone justifies the trip: Nordic wildlife, historic buildings and a carousel in a hilltop park that takes a full day to explore.
Is Stockholm good for families with children aged 0–6?
Best neighbourhoods in Stockholm for families
Djurgården
Island park — Skansen, Vasa Museum, Junibacken, flat paths. Could spend the whole trip here.
Södermalm
Hip south island with excellent family restaurants, parks and a relaxed neighbourhood feel.
Gamla Stan (Old Town)
Medieval island with cobblestones and narrow lanes. Stroller-manageable but uneven surface.
Östermalm
Upscale area near Djurgården — wide boulevards, excellent food hall, calm and safe.
Top family activities in Stockholm
Skansen Open Air Museum
Nordic wildlife park and living museum. Wolves, bears, moose, reindeer and lynx. Full day.
Vasa Museum
A 17th-century warship raised intact from the harbour. Extraordinary for all ages — toddlers are silenced by its scale.
Junibacken
Children's museum dedicated to Astrid Lindgren's characters — Pippi Longstocking world. Perfect for 2–6 year olds.
Djurgården Ferry
Short ferry from Gamla Stan to Djurgården — children love water transport, and the island is car-free.
Skansen Carousel
Victorian carousel at the top of Skansen hill. One of the most beautiful old fairground rides in Europe.
Historiska Museet
Swedish history museum — free, interactive children's sections, Viking artefacts that captivate 4+ year olds.
Where to stay in Stockholm with young children

At Six Hotel
Central Stockholm, family rooms, Södermalm adjacent. Excellent for families exploring the city.
Gamla Stan Apartments
Self-catering in the old town — unique historic setting, kitchen access, cobbled streets outside.
3-day nap-aware itinerary for Stockholm
Djurgården Island — Full Day
Ferry from Slussen to Djurgården at 9am. Arrive at Skansen as it opens — Nordic wildlife walk in the morning cool. Bears, wolves and moose before the crowds arrive.
Skansen carousel and historic buildings after lunch. Return by ferry for nap at accommodation. Afternoon: Junibacken if energy permits (book in advance).
Dinner in Södermalm — the neighbourhood has Stockholm's best family-friendly restaurant scene. Early evening, outdoor terrace in summer.
Vasa Museum & Gamla Stan
Vasa Museum at 10am (pre-booked tickets). Allow 90 minutes — toddlers react to the scale of the ship in a way no other museum produces. Coffee in the museum café.
Ferry to Gamla Stan. Cobbled streets, toy shops in narrow lanes, the palace changing of the guard (check times). Return for nap.
Dinner in Gamla Stan — tourist-zone but good family restaurants at the quieter end near Riddarholmen.
Östermalm Market & Archipelago Ferry
Östermalmshallen food market — magnificent Victorian hall, Swedish cheeses, gravlax, cinnamon buns. Breakfast here is exceptional.
Short archipelago ferry to Vaxholm (90 min each way) — the ferry network is Stockholm's great pleasure. Return by 15:00 for nap.
Final dinner in Östermalm — wide boulevards, calm setting, the neighbourhood Stockholm residents choose.
