Ljubljana is the most underrated family travel destination in Europe. The old town is car-free, the castle is reached by funicular, the dragon bridges are exactly as magnificent as toddlers require, and a family of three can travel here for 40% less than comparable Western European capitals. The riverside market and the Plečnik architecture make it genuinely beautiful. And 55 minutes away: Lake Bled — one of the most otherworldly landscapes on the continent.

Is Ljubljana good for families with children aged 0–6?

🌙 Afternoon

Riverside market for lunch provisions. Nap. Afternoon: funicular to the castle — the ride, the views, the puppet museum.

Early dinner at Gostilna na Gradu in the castle — or at Špajza in the old town, one of Ljubljana's best family restaurants.

Day 2

Lake Bled

☀️ Morning

Drive to Lake Bled at 8am (55 min). Hire a Pletna boat — traditional hand-rowed boat to the island church. The lake at 9am before the tour groups is exceptional.
