The Algarve is the answer to the question 'where should we take a child under 3?' The Atlantic water at Meia Praia or Manta Rota is calm, the beaches are wide, the entry gradual, and the family infrastructure — beach restaurants, lifeguards, playgrounds adjacent to the sand — is the best in Iberia. It is also, at €100–€150 per family day, significantly more affordable than comparable Mediterranean beach destinations.

Is Algarve good for families with children aged 0–6?

Age Rating What to expect
0–12 months Excellent Wide beaches, shallow entry, shade available, excellent hospitals in Faro.
1–2 years Perfect Paddling, sand, the Algarve beaches are the best in Europe for this age.
2–4 years Perfect Sea caves by boat, wild horses at Praia de Bordeira, Lagos old town.
4–6 years Perfect Surfing lessons, sea cave kayaking, Zoomarine water park, Lagos market.

Best neighbourhoods in Algarve for families

Lagos

Best family base in the western Algarve. Old town, Meia Praia beach nearby, Ponta da Piedade sea caves within 20 min.

Carvoeiro

Small resort town with accessible beaches, restaurants within walking distance, very family-oriented.

Sagres

Dramatic western tip — wilder Atlantic, windier, suits adventurous families with children 3+.

Arrive & Meia Praia

☀️ Morning

Check in and go directly to Meia Praia — the beach requires no warm-up or preparation. Gradual entry, lifeguards, café on the beach.

🌙 Afternoon

Return before the heat peak (14:00). Nap. Afternoon: walk Lagos old town — the walls, the market square, the Igreja de Santo António.

🍽️ Evening

Early dinner in Lagos at O Camilo or A Forja — grilled fish, rice, children understood and welcomed.

Day 2

Ponta da Piedade Sea Caves

☀️ Morning

Book the 10am sea cave boat tour from Lagos marina. 90 minutes through golden limestone arches and grottoes — one of the most beautiful natural experiences in Portugal.

🌙 Afternoon

Meia Praia again for the afternoon. Nap at accommodation (or stroller nap on the beach in the shade).

🍽️ Evening

Sunset from Ponta da Piedade viewpoint (5-minute drive from Lagos) — the cliffs at golden hour are extraordinary.

Day 3

Praia do Camilo & Sagres

☀️ Morning

Praia do Camilo (15 min from Lagos) — smaller, more dramatic cliffs, very beautiful. Steep stairs so use the carrier for toddlers.

🌙 Afternoon

Drive to Sagres (30 min) — Cape St Vincent, the westernmost point of Europe, where the Atlantic opens completely. Fortress and lighthouse.

🍽️ Evening

Final dinner in Lagos — the river quay at the marina has outdoor restaurants with water views, perfect for a warm evening with children.
