Annecy's combination of a compact old town, a genuinely clean lake, and easy walking distances makes it one of the more effortless French destinations for families with young kids.
The Old Town on Foot
Annecy's historic center is small, largely flat, and built around canals rather than steep terrain, making it easy to explore on foot with a stroller. Its arcaded streets and canal-side paths are pedestrian-friendly, without the cobblestone-and-hill combination that makes some historic French and Italian towns harder going.
The Lake as the Main Event
Lake Annecy is one of Europe's cleanest lakes, and its shoreline path (the Promenade des Marquisats and surrounding paths) offers miles of flat, stroller-friendly walking with lake views the whole way. Several designated swimming areas along the lake have gentle, shallow entry suitable for young kids, unlike a lot of alpine lakes with steep drop-offs.
A Manageable Pace
Annecy works well as a slower, single-base destination rather than a launching point for constant day trips — the old town, the lake path, and a handful of nearby parks genuinely fill several unhurried days without needing to move on. This makes it a good fit for families who want fewer, calmer activities rather than a packed sightseeing list.
Practical Notes
Annecy gets busy in peak summer, particularly around the lake on warm weekends — an early start or a weekday visit to the busiest lakefront areas avoids the worst of the crowds. The town is well served by rail from Geneva and Lyon, making it accessible without a car if you're not planning to explore further into the surrounding mountains.
