The Black Forest region is large and varied enough that picking a base town matters as much as deciding to visit the region at all — some towns are better suited to a family's daily needs than others.
Triberg: The Central, Practical Choice
Triberg is one of the more popular family bases, largely for practical reasons: it's central to the region, has direct rail access, and its famous waterfall trail offers an easy, scenic walk that works at toddler pace with a stroller for most of the route (steeper upper sections are more carrier-friendly).
Freiburg: The City Base
Freiburg, the region's largest city, offers a genuine urban base with more restaurant and grocery variety, easier pharmacy and medical access, and a walkable, largely flat old town — a good choice if you want city convenience alongside day trips into the forest itself.
Smaller Villages
Smaller villages throughout the region offer a quieter, more rural experience, often with easier access to open countryside and farm-stay style accommodation similar in spirit to Tuscany's agriturismi — genuinely peaceful, but usually requiring a car and offering fewer amenities within walking distance.
Getting Around
A car gives the most flexibility for exploring the wider region, since many of the smaller villages and hiking areas aren't well served by public transport. If you're basing in Freiburg or Triberg and mostly staying local, though, a car may not be necessary for the trip's core days.
What Works Well With Young Kids
The region's many short, well-marked walking trails suit a toddler's attention span better than long hikes, and the area's cuckoo-clock and folk-craft culture gives young kids something visually engaging beyond just scenery.
