Lake Como's steep, cliff-hugging shoreline is part of its scenic appeal — and part of why picking the right base matters more here than in a flatter destination with young kids.
What Varies Between Towns
Como's lakeside towns range from flat, walkable centers to steep hillside villages accessible mainly by boat or stairs. Towns like Como (the city itself) and Lecco offer flatter, more walkable centers with genuine infrastructure, while some of the more postcard-famous villages (Bellagio, Varenna) have real elevation and stepped streets that a stroller struggles with.
Choosing a Base
For a family trip, basing in a flatter town like Como city gives you easier daily logistics — walkable streets, a lakeside promenade, and easier access to shops and restaurants — while still allowing day trips by ferry to the more dramatic hillside villages. Basing directly in one of the steeper villages means charm and views but a genuinely harder daily routine navigating stairs and slopes with a stroller.
Getting Around the Lake
The ferry network connecting towns around the lake is a highlight with kids — a scenic, low-effort way to see multiple villages without a car, and boats generally accommodate strollers without issue. Driving around the lake is possible but involves narrow, winding roads that take longer than the distances suggest.
What Works Well With Young Kids
Lakeside promenades in the flatter towns offer easy walking with water views, and several towns have small, calm lakefront areas suitable for wading (though this isn't a swimming-beach destination the way Mediterranean coastal towns are). Gelato and slow café time are, as anywhere in Italy, a reliable way to fill an afternoon with a toddler.
