Sintra is a genuinely worthwhile day trip from Lisbon, but its combination of hilly terrain, crowds, and spread-out palaces means it needs more planning with young kids than the average city day trip.
The Terrain Reality
Sintra's town center and its palace grounds (Pena Palace especially) sit on genuinely steep hills, with winding roads and stepped paths connecting them. This isn't a flat, stroller-everywhere day — a carrier is the more practical choice for most of the palace visits themselves, with a stroller more useful for the flatter historic center.
Picking Which Sites to Prioritize
Sintra has several major sites spread across the hillside (Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, the Moorish Castle, Monserrate), and trying to see them all in one day with young kids is usually overambitious. Picking one, maybe two, and building slack around nap timing and walking pace tends to produce a much better day than an ambitious multi-palace itinerary.
Getting There and Around
The train from Lisbon is straightforward and stroller-manageable, but once in Sintra, getting between sites usually means a shuttle bus, taxi, or tuk-tuk, since walking distances between the hillside palaces are longer and steeper than they look on a map. Booking timed tickets in advance for Pena Palace specifically is worth doing, since queues can be long and unpredictable with a tired toddler in tow.
Timing the Visit
Sintra gets significantly busier as the day goes on, with tour buses arriving from Lisbon by mid-morning. An early start — genuinely early, ideally arriving close to opening — makes a meaningful difference in crowd levels and gives you first access before nap-time pressure sets in.
