Choosing Your Destination for a 5-Day Family City Break

What a 5-day trip can realistically absorb, what makes a destination well-suited to a short trip, and what to skip on this trip length.

A 5-day trip is a real, valid trip length for a family with young kids — but it comes with tighter constraints than a longer trip, and picking the right destination matters more than it would for a two-week trip that can absorb a mediocre choice.

What a 5-Day Trip Can Actually Absorb

Once you subtract travel days and typical jet lag adjustment for young kids, a 5-day trip from North America often leaves only 2-3 genuinely settled days. That's not enough time for a multi-city itinerary — a single city, or a city plus one easy day trip, is the realistic scope. Trying to stretch a 5-day trip across two or three destinations usually means most of the trip is spent adjusting or transiting rather than actually being anywhere.

What Makes a Destination Work for This Length

The best-suited destinations for a short trip share a few traits: a direct or short-connection flight (protecting your limited days), a compact, walkable core so you're not losing time to transit within the city, and enough to do at a gentle pace that you don't feel like you're rushing to "see everything" in the little time you have.

What to Skip on a Short Trip

This is not the trip length for ambitious day trips to a second city, for cramming in every major sight, or for a destination that requires significant advance logistics (car rentals, complex train connections) to access. Save those for a longer trip where you have the slack to absorb something going sideways.

Timing the Trip Itself

Given how much of a 5-day trip gets consumed by adjustment, timing your arrival for a weekend or the start of a week (rather than mid-week) can help you land on the calmer, more settled days without wasting them. If you have any flexibility, a slightly longer trip — even 7 days instead of 5 — meaningfully changes the math, since it roughly doubles your settled time rather than adding a proportional amount.

Our guide to trip length covers this trade-off in more depth, and our destination quiz can help match a short trip to a destination genuinely suited to it.
